Moving to Mérida: pack for the heat.
Mérida is hot, humid and at sea level — and it's the farthest of the big retiree destinations from the U.S. border by road. Both facts change what's worth bringing: anything that suffers in humidity or takes a lot of truck space deserves a second look.

What the climate means for your things
| Measure | Mérida |
|---|---|
| Elevation | 9 m (30 ft) |
| Mean daily high, May | 36.7 °C / 98.1 °F |
| Mean daily low, January | 16.9 °C / 62.4 °F |
| Mean relative humidity | 72% |
| Annual rainfall | 996.5 mm / 39.2 in |
- Cooling is a must, and it's bought locally. Mini-splits are installed for local power and refrigerant; see appliances. Don't ship U.S. window units.
- Humidity is hard on some things: leather, paper archives, solid-wood pieces and musical instruments need care. That's a reason to think twice about shipping cheap wooden furniture, not a reason to leave heirlooms behind.
- Winter clothes: January lows average about 17 °C, so most heavy coats can stay or be sold.
Shopping locally
Mérida has a Costco warehouse alongside Mexican chains, so everyday household goods are easy to replace. Our price comparison found big appliances cheaper in Mexico and electronics pricier — which, combined with the long haul, points the usual way: ship small and valuable, buy big and cheap.
Getting your things there
- By road: about 1,351 mi (2,174 km), 27 hours of driving from Laredo; from Houston it's about 1,540 mi.
- By sea: the port of Progreso is about 33 km from Mérida. Ask movers whether they route by sea to Progreso or by road via Laredo — the answer changes price and timing.

Paperwork for retirees
- Permanent residents can import their used household goods duty-free as a menaje de casa; the consulate certificate for foreigners costs USD 195 in 2026, and consulates say you need a customs broker. Temporary residents can only bring them as a temporary import. Details in the menaje de casa guide.
- Your list needs to be in Spanish, item by item, with brand, model and serial for electronics — the menaje list generator builds it from your inventory.
- Bringing a car is a separate question: read bringing a car to Mexico before you decide.
