The menaje list, done right.

Both the traditional menaje de casa and the free menaje doméstico start with the same document: a list of everything you're bringing, in Spanish, item by item. Consulates are strict about the format. Here is what they ask for, an example, and a way to generate yours from your MenajeFlow inventory.

Updated

The short answer
  • In Spanish, typed, one item per line, with your full name at the top. Group it by room or category.
  • Electronics and appliances need brand, model and serial number. Goods must be used (acquired 6+ months before).
  • The Chicago consulate asks for 4 copies, each signed in original; the model list from the consulates asks you to initial every page.

Format based on the consulates' model list. Each serialized item gets its own line, even if you have two of the same.

Generate it from your inventory

  1. Add your items to a free MenajeFlow inventory. For electronics and appliances, open “Brand, model, serial, condition” and fill them in — the serial is on the label on the back or inside the door.
  2. Decide what you're taking. The list includes only items marked Take or Ship, so the things you sell or replace don't appear.
  3. Under “Menaje list” choose the route (traditional or menaje doméstico), enter your name, and download PDF to print or Word to edit.
  4. Print the copies your consulate asks for, sign each one and initial every page.

Common mistakes

  • Listing a vehicle. Vehicles are never part of a menaje.
  • Listing items you can't bring: consulates exclude plants, food, alcohol, cleaning products, medicines, weapons and chemicals.
  • Brand-new goods. They must have been acquired at least six months before — new purchases go through the allowance instead.
  • For menaje doméstico, two of the same appliance. Only one of each of the 22 listed appliances is allowed — see menaje doméstico.

Questions people ask

Does the menaje list have to be in Spanish?

Yes. Consulate forms ask for the list in Spanish, typed, one item per line.

Do I need serial numbers for everything?

For electronics and appliances, yes: consulates ask for brand, model and serial number. Furniture, clothes and household items are described without serials.

How many copies do I need?

It depends on the consulate. Chicago asks for four copies, each with an original signature. Check your consulate's page before printing.

Is the MenajeFlow list generator free?

Yes. It's part of the free inventory, and you can download the list as PDF or Word as many times as you need.
