Paperwork in Chicago
- Traditional menaje de casa: the Chicago consulate takes it without an appointment, 8:30 am to 12:00 pm, Monday to Friday, for USD 146 (cash or card). Bring originals plus four copies of proof of nationality, ID and proof of living abroad, and a typed list in four signed copies.
- Menaje doméstico (Mexicans returning from the U.S.): free, no broker, online with Llave MX or at a consulate — with limits: one of each listed appliance, tools up to USD 5,000, USD 1,000 of other goods, one transport and one trip. See menaje doméstico.
- Either way, start from your list: the menaje list generator turns your inventory into the Spanish, item-by-item format.
Crossing at Laredo
- World Trade Bridge: commercial trucks only. Colombia Solidarity Bridge (to Colombia, Nuevo León): commercial and non-commercial traffic.
- On the traditional route, a customs broker handles the crossing; under menaje doméstico you present the INM-approved list yourself at the customs office you chose.
- U-Haul trucks and trailers can't cross into Mexico.
